Clutch: Allen West's Wife Defend Couples' Right to Get Thier Freak On

Perhaps you recall the recent story about Florida congressional candidate Allen West, who is running to represent Florida’s 18th district. I didn’t know much about him other than he was one of those curious Black conservatives. But then, he popped on my radar again when a Florida-based reporter published the details of a personal letter from 2003 that he sent while serving as an army cornel in Iraq to his wife of then-fourteen years. In the letter, he promised to remain “a clean-cut, healthy and affectionate man,” demanded of her “standard and non-negotiable sex acts” and asked her to be his “porn star.”
Remember him now?
In a new TV ad, his wife, Dr. Angela West, has addressed her husband’s critics, saying “recent attacks on my husband go to far.” She continues, painting a wholesome image of her husband, who is seen walking along a pier with the couple’s two daughters. Surely the revelations about their sex life are embarrassing for the Wests and especially their children as no one wants to think about their parents getting it in. But really, they have nothing to be ashamed of.
So we’re clear, I don’t agree with West’s politics. He’s a Tea Party Congressman, who’s oft called “anti-woman.” He infamously compared someone other than him riding his motorcycle to “touching my wife” — kinda like how R. Kelly compared women to Jeeps — and he thinks that “Planned Parenthood women” are “neutering American men,” then voted to defund the women’s health group. He also waged a personal attack on a congresswoman, deriding her as “not a lady,” as if that’s so important to her political leanings. He’s not who I would vote for if I lived in Florida, but for the sake of being fair, I need to join his wife in calling a foul on the play for the recent attacks on him for his sexual proclivities.
Forgive me if I can’t find the so-called “scandal” in a man wanting to get it on freaky style with his wife. I heard there was a scandal, read all the details, and was still waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop. A man wants to do it with his wife? Um, where’s the scandal in that? Wouldn’t there be more scandal in him not wanting to?
I know it’s an election year and there’s a tendency to make mountains out of molehills for the sake of swaying voters, but I just can’t find where West went wrong in this instance. He wasn’t caught asking for wild sex from his mistress, another man or a minor, which would be scandalous for sure. If there’s anybody he should be talking to about his fantasies, it should be the woman he married, right?
